West Coast

"One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well."

-- Virginia Woolf

This work of art seeks an elegant simplicity through a complex series of lines exploring the patterns found in organic produce.

A local musician and I embarked on a Gypsy Tour up the West Coast in 2012. We left our wallets at home and traded our respective art forms in exchange for food and accommodation. We had to trust in the goodness of locals. We met Jacques and Nadia Tredoux, a Christian Afrikaans couple, where they lived on the Giftberg Holiday Farm. They generously invited us into their home where they gave us a glimpse into their lives. I will never forget the Potjie Kos that they made for us. The meat was freshly hunted and each and every vegetable and spice was picked from their magnificent garden.

This West Coast adventure serves as a constant reminder of the pure hearts and souls of the people in South Africa. This drawing is a tribute to the kindness we received from two strangers and a celebration of the beauty found in the organic food they served us.
