Buffalo Drift

“Possessions, outward success, publicity, luxury – to me these have always been contemptible. I believe that a simple and unassuming manner of life is the best for everyone, best for both the body and the mind.” – Albert Einstein

There are few experiences superior to a quiet weekend escape ensconced in nature. This weekend had all the soulful benefits of camping with all of the luxuries to make it exceptional. While looking for a weekend destination in 2015 I happened to discover Buffalo Drift. It is close enough to Cape Town to drive after work and far enough to switch off and enjoy a lovely road trip with friends. We decided to head back there for a second time early January to surprise a friend for her thirtieth birthday. She is not one for attention or parties so we thought a quiet girls weekend away would be the perfect way to shower her with love. Gifts are truly special sometimes but I have been trying to rather focus on experiences that create lasting memories and allow us to spend quality time with the people we love most.

So what to you get?

There is a double bed, bunker bed, crisp white linen, pillows, extra spacious shower with hot water, en suite bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, electricity, lamps, balcony, table, chairs, private braai area and a cupboard.

Is this destination for you?

This is NOT for anyone that is looking for luxury. If you enjoy the simple life of camping Buffalo Drift is the perfect place to escape to. As much as I adore camping I find that it is quite a bit of effort to set up an extensive campsite especially if you can only get to your destination after work on a Friday. Having a bed, bathroom, cleaning service and kitchen definitely makes life a lot easier and you have more time to simply relax.

There are two larger houses down the river that bigger groups of friends can stay in and I have heard about some amazing bachelor and bachelorette weekends there. It is cost effective and a great place to celebrate with friends. The tented camps are spread out across one stretch of the river and the two larger houses on the other side. There is pigeon shooting, hiking trails, canoes and a river swing if you are looking for some adventure during your stay.

One negative is that if there is a loud bachelor party the bass of their music carries far across the river. It didn’t keep me awake at night, but if it bothers you simply ask the owners to have them switch off the music at a respectable time.

Tips:

From my two visits to Buffalo Drift I can offer some much needed advice for maximizing your stay there. First and most importantly, go in summer and take a lilo or some form of a floating device. It is very hot in Tulbach and there is a river to float around in. We spent our entire Saturday on the river and had some picnic items waiting for us on the riverbank to snack on in between. Be sure to wear a hat and pack some sunscreen. Always close your tent flap at night when the light is on to avoid those pesky mosquitos. Take a sharp knife for cooking, some firelighters and extra lights for the braai area. You can order wood from the owners at any point of your stay if you want to avoid the hassle of taking your own. Take some ice with for your drinks.

On Sunday after checking out we headed to the Montpellier Wine Estate for a tasting. It is one of the most beautiful places I have visited in the Western Cape and very well worth the visit.

Buffalo Drift was a serene weekend destination spent lazing around on lilo's soaking up the summer sun and celebrating friendship. These luxury tented camps are the perfect place to unwind in nature.
